ICJ says Israel must stop its Rafah offensive: Amb. Bob Rae comments – May 24, 2024
The International Court of Justice has ordered Israel on Friday to immediately halt its military offensive in Rafah and reopen the crossing to humanitarian aid following an emergency request from South Africa.
Rulings from the ICJ are legally binding, but the court does not have police to enforce its rulings. Countries have ignored them in the past.
A spokesperson of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement calling South Africa’s accusations of genocide “false, outrageous and disgusting,“ and that Israel is complying with international law during its offensive in Rafah.
Canada said that Israel must stop its Rafah offensive and comply to the ruling. What will that mean for relations between the two countries?
CPAC’s Michael Serapio discusses the situation with Canada’s Ambassador to the UN, Bob Rae.
