Johann Kuhnau (1660-1722) was one of the most important German keyboard composers before Bach. Incidentally, he also held the position of Thomascantor in Leipzig before Bach. While often remembered for his Biblical Sonatas, the set of Frische Clavier-Früchte (Fresh keyboard fruits) represents the first opus devoted entirely to keyboard sonatas.
