長さ4メートルの青竹を大蛇に見立て、僧兵姿の鞍馬法師が近江(東)丹波(西)の両座に分かれ、青竹を山刀で三段に切り落とし堂内に駆け入る速さを競い豊凶を占う。
水への感謝を捧げて災禍を断ち切り、吉事の招来を祈る千年も続く古儀としても知られており、清々しくも厳粛に、勇壮豪快に修せられる祭儀である。
