Two CMEs Headed For Earth - G1 to G2-Class Geomagnetic Storms are Expected on Apr. 14-15

NOAA forecasters say that two CMEs will hit Earth’s magnetic field on April 14th and April 15th. The glancing blow of the first CME could trigger a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm with photographic auroras at high latitudes. This CME was hurled into space by a beautiful eruption in the sun’s northern hemisphere on April 11th. A faint partial halo coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed in SOHO LASCO-C2 starting from 02:30 UTC on April 12th. It is probably associated with the filament eruption observed in SDO/AIA 304 data at 01:10 UTC on April 12th. This CME is expected to arrive early on April 15th. G1 (Minor to G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storms are expected when the CME arrives. Solar Activity Solar flaring activity over the last 24 hours has been moderate with multiple C-class flares and one M-class flare. The strongest flare was an M2.4 close to the east solar limb peaking at 05:02 UTC (Apr. 13). It was likely associated with a new active region (AR 3637), currently rotating on disk. There are currently seven active regions on the visible solar disk. The solar flaring activity is expected to be at low levels over the next 24 hours with C-class flares and a chance of M-class flares.
