It originally comes from Irish and Scottish folklore, and actually has a “ghost“ aspect. According to legend, the Jack-o’-Lantern is based on the story of a man named “Stingy Jack“. Jack tricked the devil and was unable to go to either hell or heaven, becoming a wandering soul. He put the flames of hell into a turnip to create a lantern, which he carried with him to wander for eternity. In this way, the Jack-o’-Lantern is not just a decoration, but also has a “ghost“ aspect based on folklore. During Halloween, it is also used as a talisman to ward off evil spirits.
