Advancing with Watercolor: Darks against Lights “A Hansom Cab”
This video was done after a week of plein air painting with watercolor in New York City. It is part of a series of videos featuring Central Park, Bryant Park, Times Square, and Dumbo park at the Brooklyn Bridge. The workshop lasted six days and each day was a new adventure . Today we are thinking and practicing our tonal values along Bethesda Terrace. this video I I try to describe my thoughts as I build the composition, some strategies that I use in deciding when to paint certain passages and how to work wet on wet. In particular I develop my motif through contrasting darks agains a light background or vise versa. The hansom cab in this painting is constructed with a dark against Light value pattern.
In each video I will address some of the challenges with each motive and ways to meet those challenges. Along the way I hope you experience the same thrill of working in the city of New York under an open sky that we did.
