Bulgaria 1985

Bulgaria’s Communist leader (1954-89) Todor Zhivkov at the heart of the “Banner of Peace“ festivities in and around Sofia, 1985. By 1989 four such gatherings were held in Sofia with thousands of children from over 130 countries participating. Supposedly non-political, the movement was nominally under the patronage of UNESCO and other UN agencies, but became a focal point of Communist Bulgaria’s cultural management in the 1980s. Converted from 16 mm film.
