Felix Mendelssohn was born on 3rd February 1809 in Hamburg. His compositions include compositions include symphonies, piano music, organ music and chamber music, and, of course, his beloved Violin Concerto. Fifteen years ago, at the Menuhin Competition Cardiff 2008 Senior Finals, Ray Chen - then only 19 years old - was awarded Senior 1st Prize after his performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with Sinfonia Cymru, conducted by Garreth Jones. When we originally released this video, our master tape had been cut short but we have recently been able to retrieve the missing footage and are delighted to release for the first time the full recording in celebration of Mendelssohn’s birthday.
