Государственный художественно-архитектурный дворцово-парковый ансамбль города Петергоф, расположенный в 29 километрах от Санкт-Петербурга (Ленинграда) на берегу Финского залива, возник в начале XVIII века и развивался в течение всего XVIII - первой половине XIX веков. Этот грандиозный комплекс — результат воплощения творческих замыслов зодчих, ваятелей, садоводов, труда крепостных крестьян. В годы Великой Отечественной войны гитлеровцы превратили в руины Большой дворец и Большой каскад, уничтожили тысячи произведений искусства. Возрожденный трудом советских людей, ансамбль Петродворца — памятник истории и культуры прошлого. Petrodvorets (“Peter’s Palace“), is a magnificent palace-and-park complex situated on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, twenty-nine kilometers outside St. Petersburg (Leningrad). Construction work began at Peterhof in 1714. Peterhof continued to grow throughout the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth centuries and owes its magnificence to the combined efforts of many outstanding architects, sculptors, and decorators, as well as talented Russian craftsmen. During the War of 1941—45 the Nazi troops ruined the Great Palace and the Great Cascade, plundered and destroyed thousands of works of art.
