Ashanti War Drum in Kumasi

This drum comes from the Ashanti people of Ghana. When surprised by an enemy, the drummers would play this war drum which sounds convincingly like a leopard in order to frighten the invaders and halt their progress, long enough for the Ashanti to muster their forces and launch a counter attack. The guide at the Palace Museum in Kumasi was kind enough to demonstrate the sound of this drum.
