Passengers thrown around as nightmare turbulence hits flight

At least 40 people have been injured after freak turbulence hit their Air Europa flight, with one even ending up wedged in the ceiling. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was traveling from Spain to Uruguay when the turbulence hit, and footage captured by passengers shows the resulting chaos. Ceiling panels were torn off and seats were uprooted, with some headrests covered in blood. ‘Suddenly the plane abruptly fell and we all went up,’ one passenger told reporters. ‘Those who were not wearing seatbelts flew away and some were stuck to the ceiling. It lasted about 3.5 seconds.’ ‘You were aware that you were falling at an incalculable speed,’ said another passenger. ‘And you felt like it was going to end there, that you were going to die.’ Following the incident, passengers can be seen lying in the aisle in neck braces, while one man’s legs can be seen dangling from above the overhead luggage compartment. Several people suffered fractures, while at least 20 people were taken to the hospital following an emergency landing in Brazil. A statement from Air Europa confirmed, ‘The plane has landed normally and the injuries of varying degrees that were recorded are already being treated.’
