Greek Revolutionary Song: “Θούριος“

Happy Independence Day, for all the Greeks around the world! March 25, 1821 - March 25, 2021, let us celebrate the 200 years of Greek Independence! “Θούριος“ or “Thoruios“ was a song written by Rigas Feraios in 1797, nearly two decades before the Greek Revolution. In this song, Thourios urges is fellow Greeks to throw off the chains of the Ottomans, who in many respects, treated Greeks as second class citizens within their empire. Feraios went so far as to travel to Vienna, where Napoleon Bonaparte was at the time, and urge his help in the liberation of his homeland. However, before his plans could be realized, Feraois was betrayed by the Austrians, who handed him over to the Ottoman authorities in Belgrade, in order to appease their erstwhile “ally“ while they dealt with Napoleon.
