Highland Military Gathering (1914-1918)

Highland Military Gathering at Chelmsford, Essex. Highland Games. Opens w/ CU Scotsman in kilt preparing to put a shot - (shot-put) - he stands there on 1 leg; jiggling the shot up & down for some time; then gives a hop and turn and throws it from his shoulder. A few other men on field; behind him; spectators seated in BG. Next the traditional tossing the caber - man is pushing long heavy pole up vertically; w/ help of 2 others. Man alone; holding pole; takes a few steps around. Finally he dips and heaves the thing which turns & bounces on end - but doesn’t entirely flip over. Still; it takes a lot of strength. Side view on an outdoor stage - a man in full Scottish uniform does a dance; like a jig; as another man plays music on bagpipes. Very energetic. Scottish festivals. National costumes.
