Maria Caniglia (1905-1979) was one of Italy’s greatest dramatic sopranos, very prominent during the 30’s and 40’s. Her Met debut was Desdemona, in 1938. She is generally considered as one of the greatest of verismo singers. Her dark and intense voice was very thrilling, as can be heard in this classic “Suicidio.“
