Transnistria: Is really the last PLACE of the USSR?

Transnistria is a breakaway state located in Eastern Europe, between Moldova and Ukraine. It declared independence from Moldova in 1990, but it is not internationally recognized as a sovereign state. Transnistria has been described as a “frozen conflict“ area, as a ceasefire was established in 1992 but a final resolution has not been reached. Transnistria is often referred to as one of the last remnants of the Soviet Union due to its continued use of Soviet symbols, its authoritarian political system, and its close ties to Russia. The region maintains strong political, economic, and military ties to Russia, and Russian troops are stationed in Transnistria. While Transnistria retains some characteristics of the Soviet era, it is not accurate to say that it is the last pocket of the USSR. The Soviet Union officially dissolved in 1991, and most former Soviet republics have since become independent states with varying degrees of political and economic reforms. Transnistria remains a unique case of a breakaway region that has not achieved international recognition as an independent state.
