Morphogenetic Sorrow 2023 - Life is Simply Unfair (Zero Escape Orchestra)

The yearly arrangement of Morphogenetic Sorrow, originally from Zero Escape: 999, but features in Virtue’s Last Reward and Zero Time Dilemma. Morphogenetic Sorrow from Zero Escape; the 6th edition. It felt great going back to a more traditional orchestration given 2021 was a piano solo cover and 2022 was a piano & flute duet. My aim this time was to build on a lot of ideas from earlier versions I’ve created. I didn’t want to go too wild arrangement-wise mostly as I thought this would be a nice opportunity to apply many of the skills I have developed since my last orchestration of Morphogenetic Sorrow back in 2019. One interesting thing that stands out is that this arrangement uses less instruments than in 2019, but in my view sounds way more full and deep. It shows how sometimes it comes down to how instruments are utilized rather than how many instruments are used. To my surprise, this piece ended up being 7mins. I don’t, generally, look at the length of a piece while I’m composing it. Structure-wise this arrangement can be split into 3 parts. I’d like to say that it was a clever ploy to represent the 3 games in Zero Escape, but I’d be giving myself way too much credit for what was an instinctive rather than well thought out choice. Part 1 - ends at 3:08: cycles through a few different Morphogenetic Sorrow motifs, referencing Blue Bird Lamentation and using BAD END from ZTD as a transition into Part 2. In the video (which admittedly isn’t made yet), I expect I’ll use VLR shots for this section. It’s somewhat inspired by my Morphogenetic Sorrow 2019 arrangement. Part 2 - begins at 3:09, ends at 5:06: soft and uses the piano as the melodic instrument and the harp helps to guide the melody. There is a bit of a call and response going on with the piano starting each section of Morphogenetic Sorrow and the orchestra then repeating it back until the third section of part 2 at 4:41. It’s somewhat inspired by my Morphogenetic Sorrow 2021 arrangement. Part 3 - begins at 5:07: this is what I’d call OG Morphogenetic Sorrow. A direct 1:1 rearrangement of the original with a deeper harmony being the main addition. Richer and fuller than my Morphogenetic Sorrow 2016 arrangement. Now typing this out, I highly suspect this part of the video to end with shots from 999. Usually the shots I use start from 999 so it will be nice to end on it for a change.
