On the way to our hotel, passing through the Urukh Gorge, we stopped in the village of Zadalesk, where there is a house-museum dedicated to a truly iconic figure in the history of the Ossetians, Zadaleski Nana. The story of Nana dates back to the end of the 14th century, when the army of Tamerlane marched through Ossetia with fire and sword. The Ossetian people fought bravely against the cruel and ruthless conqueror, but the enemy troops far outnumbered the defenders, and almost the entire small, brave people of Ossetia were wiped out. After one of these terrible battles, which took place in the Urukh Gorge, Nana gathered all the surviving children from the surrounding destroyed and burned villages and went with them high into the mountains, where they were beyond the reach of Tamerlane’s army. Under very difficult conditions - living with the children in a cold cave and subsisting mainly on berries and roots - Nana managed to save the lives of most of the children she took with her. After Tamerlane’s army left Ossetia, Nana and her children descended from the mountains and settled in the village of Zadalesk. The house-museum we visited is believed to have been built on the site of the house where Nana and her children lived. And it reflects the conditions in which Ossetian families lived at that time. Alan: Here they put straw to filter the Ossetian beer… That is, the straw served as a sieve… There is a small hole here. Alan: If you look closely, you’ll see that there were indentations made here… Generations were marked by such indentations… As soon as the head of the family changed in the house, a notch was made in the chain. There are 18 notches here. If you calculate about 60 years per generation, you come to about a thousand years… Avdan is the cradle. The word is formed from the ossetian word that means number 7. It is considered that the family must have at least seven children. The seventh child, as a rule, was called ... Avdan. Since in every Ossetian family a baby is the soul of the house, its angelic branch ... the best songs, thoughts and dreams are connected with the baby ... the cradle took the most blessed place in the house, next to the stove. Avdan was zealously protected from evil forces... for example, it was considered a sin to rock an empty avdan... People knew the craftsmen who made amazingly beautiful avdans by name. But especially honored were the craftsmen who, as they say, had a lucky hand. To such masters the highlanders went even from distant ravines ... after all, every family wishes their children the happiest destiny. Alan: I grew up in Avdan, my wife grew up in Avdan, I have a son, David, and a daughter, Kira, and they all went through Avdan… The heroic deed of Nana has not remained unknown, and even today Nana is revered as the savior of the Ossetian people. Every year in July in Zadalesk a great festival is celebrated in honor of Nana. People ask Nana for health and well-being for their families and a happy future for their children.
