Whale evolution is an enigma, it is a testament of the potency of evolution by natural selection, in shaping organisms to whatever ways the environment demanded. Just a century ago, no one would have guessed that whales were descended from a small deer-like animal. They underwent a drastic change from a racoon-sized land-dwelling animal to the biggest animal to have ever existed on the planet, and in between, they took the shape of uncanny otherworldly creatures.
