Yuzhong District (渝中区) is the central district and the heart of Chongqing (重庆), serving as the capital of the municipality. It is recognized as the political, economic, and entertainment center of Chongqing. The district is geographically unique, surrounded on three sides by water, making it effectively a peninsula between the Jialing (嘉陵江) and Yangtze Rivers (长江). This strategic location, combined with its hilly terrain and limited space, has led to the development of some of the tallest skyscrapers in China, making Yuzhong the most densely populated district in the municipality. Yuzhong District’s significance is not only modern but also historical, as it hosted the relocated headquarters of the Nationalist Government during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Its economic prowess is evident with a GDP of 95.8 billion Yuan in 2015, and it houses the Jiefangbei CBD, a leading business and financial center in western China. The district is a hub for both domestic and international banks, insurance agencies, and even boasts the presence of three-quarters of the world’s top 500 enterprises in Chongqing. Education in Yuzhong is represented by institutions like Chongqing Bashu Secondary School (巴蜀中学), a renowned secondary school founded in 1933, emphasizing values such as selflessness, justice, honesty, and simplicity. Transportation in Yuzhong is highly developed, with the district being served by four metro lines, facilitating easy access to various parts of Chongqing.
