(6th May 1967) Match of the Day - Southampton v Nottingham Forest

6th May 1967: ’Match of the Day’ editor Alec Weeks, who passed away on Monday, must have felt Manchester United would be unable to seal the First Division crown with a victory at West Ham United on this day. Instead, with plenty at stake, cameras were sent to the Dell where Southampton entertained Nottingham Forest. Just one week previous second placed Forest were dumped out of the FA Cup Semi Final 2-1 by Spurs, costing them the chance of a possible Double. Now anything less than a win against the Saints would hand Manchester United the League title as well. Unfortunately for Forest they faced Southampton needing to win to avoid relegation and survival sending down Aston Villa. Commentator: Kenneth Wolstenholme
