Enoch Powell and Roy Jenkins Clash Over Europe in Heated Referendum Debate (1975)

On 4 June 1975, the day before the British public voted in a referendum on UK membership of the European Economic Community (EEC), ITN’s Robert Kee chaired a special debate between Roy Jenkins and Enoch Powell. Jenkins, as home secretary in Harold Wilson’s Labour government, was a staunch advocate of continued British membership of the EEC, while Ulster Unionist MP Enoch Powell was making the case for Britain to leave.
