Nuijamiesten Marssi [Finnish Patriotic March] [English and Finnish lyrics]
A march about the Cudgel war where Finnish peasants, mainly from Ostrobothnia rose up against Klas Fleming, the Governor of Finland due to the troops who were in Finland to fight against the Russians in the Swedish-Russian war of 1570-1595. The peasants were required to feed and house the soldiers by law which took a toll on the poor Finnish peasants.
Lyrics:
Finnish:
Meill’ on hanki ja jää, meill’ on halla ja yö,
meill’ on ankarat käskyt kohtalon.
Kenen kerran nuijamme maahan lyö,se maassa on.
On meidät vihurit valinneet,
(On meidät vihurit valinneet)
yöt meille salansa uskoneet,
(yöt meille salansa uskoneet)
on antanut hukka hampahansa
ja ilves varmimman katseistansa.
Meill’ on halla ja yö, meill’ on hanki ja jää
pelätkää, pelätkää!
Meill’ on leimuva lemmen ja vihan lies,
kuka meidän tiellämme kestää vois!
Kun on kerran lähtenyt Pohjan mies -
-seis, voitto pois!
Me tulemme voimalla kotoisen tarmon,
(Me tulemme voimalla kotoisen tarmon)
me hylkäämme kaiken vieraan armon.
(me hylkäämme kaiken vieraan armon)
Ken on syntynyt lakeilla Pohjanmaan,
hän tietää tuomion tunnossaan:
hän ei leppyä voi, hän ei väistyä saa
--vaviskaa, vaviskaa!
English:
We have the snow and ice, we have the frost and the night,
We have the stern commands of fate.
Whom is struck down by our cudgel, is down for good.
We have been chosen by stormy winds,
(We have been chosen by stormy winds)
The night has entrusted us with its secrets,
(The night has entrusted us with its secrets)
the wolf has given its fangs and the lynx rendered us its strong sight.
We have the snow and ice, we have the frost and the night,
Be afraid, be afraid!
We have the burning heart of love and hate,
Who could stand in our way!
When once the man of the North has gone to battle
- Halt! Victory shall be ours!
We come with the strength of our native vigor
(We come with the strength of our native vigor)
We abandon all foreign mercy.
(We abandon all foreign mercy)
He who is born on the fields of Ostrobothia, is bound by the judgement in his heart:
He cannot relent, he cannot yield,
--Tremble, tremble!
