Just looking to see if bones could have been used in bricks or mortar or possibly both.
Bricks and Mortar need lime and if there is a shortage of lime it can be extracted from calcinated bone. Joseph Aspdin, the bricklayer who discovered Portland Cement, used to sweep the roads to get his lime! Or so they say!
They say the ’secret ingredient’ in Roman cement was volcanic ash... the Romans were obsessed with death and terrified of what would happen to their dead bodies to the point where they had burial clubs and could ’save’ for a decent cremation. Where they terrified their bones might be interred forever in the fabric of the city!
