Making my first sword has been quite a journey! So many lessons learned, so many new bigger tools I want to make, I suspect it’s a never ending rabbit hole! And I can’t wait to jump in deeper.
This sword is made of 1070 high carbon steel (aka c70) with cast brass guard and pommel and iroko wood handle with brass and copper wire inlays.
Needless to say the most challenging part has been the heat treatment, being used to heat steel with my temperature controlled oven these days, going back to coke forge it’s been rough. The main problem is the heat being too high and too localized, so yes, I’ll make a long propane forge sometime soon!
Making the cast brass guard and pommel on the other hand has been very straight forward starting from a 3D printed pattern.
For the handle I really wanted to try again wire inlay
