September is the time of the year in South Africa when cultural atmosphere really comes to live as young goddesses, (maidens) prepare for what is considered to be the most important event in any young girl’s life who is practicing the ancient culture of amatshitshi. Umkhosi Womhlanga or the Reed Dance is an annual cultural ceremony that takes place in Nongoma, Their are two major Reed Dance events one in south africa and other in Eswatini Last year the reed dance Eswatini had about 100 thousand goddesses attending and this year the number increased to almost over 150 thousand goddesses attending the event.
