Medtner, Sonata-Idyll in G major, Op. 56
The Sonata-Idyll, in G major, is Medtner’s last piano sonata, completed in London, in 1937 (contemporaneous with Bartok’s Sonata for two pianos and percussion). Its atmosphere is calm, elegant, and reflective—unlike most other Medtner sonatas, which are virtuosic, complex, and tumultuous.
