Tōda Ryū finds its origin in Chūjō Ryū of the Mikawa province.
During the Nanboku-chō era (1336-1392), Chūjō Nagahide accomplished himself by founding the Chūjō Ryū Heihō style. Since his eldest son Nagahide was a retainer of the Shiba family in the Echizen province, Chūjō Ryū was transferred there. It grew up and reached the peak of its fame at the time of Toda Echigo-no-Kami Shigemasa, when the style was popular under the name “Toda Ryū”.
Toda Ryū of Echizen was imported in the Tsugaru region (west of current Aomori Prefecture) when Tsugaru Nobumasa was the fourth successor at the head of the eponymous clan.
A samurai from the Oshi Clan of Bushū, named Matsuda Jingobei, came one day to Echizen and learned sword fighting from Toda Yoshimasa. He received the certificate of proficiency from him and was allowed to take his name. He moved to Edo (current Tokyo) to teach Kenjutsu, but for some reason left for Hirosaki, where he took the name Hanbē Yoshimasa. He also changed his family name by changing slightly the top of the first character, transforming it to Tōda. It’s then under the name Chakuden Tōda Ryū that he taught his techniques to the local warriors.
In the 8th year of Enpō (1680), Yoshimasa was officially hired as Shihan by Nobumasa, the master of the local clan. After that, his pupil Asari Tadayoshi inherited the school, which benefited the Asari for generations.
Nowadays, the eighteenth successor Takeuchi Fumikata is responsible for it.
“When you meet an enemy, the mind’s action cannot be delayed even a little bit, but you have to approach the opponent naturally like running water and strike him down with a single blow ; that’s how it should be done” is the characteristic principle of the school.
