Bali is a province of Indonesia, known as the westernmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying east of Java and west of Lombok. The province includes the island of Bali itself and a few smaller nearby islands, with Denpasar as its capital and largest city. Bali is renowned as Indonesia’s main tourist destination, thanks to its significant rise in tourism since the 1980s, with tourism-related business making up 80% of its economy. Bali stands out for being the only Hindu-majority province in Indonesia, with 86.9% of the population adhering to Balinese Hinduism. The island is celebrated for its highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, and music. Bali has hosted numerous international events, such as the Indonesian International Film Festival, Miss World 2013, the 2018 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, and the 2022 G20 summit. In 2017 and again in 2021, TripAdvisor named Bali the world’s top destination in its Traveller’s Choice award. The island is part of the Coral Triangle, known for the highest biodiversity of marine species in the world. Bali is also home to the Subak irrigation system, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is a testament to the island’s sophisticated ancient agricultural practices.
