Monkeypox declared a global health emergency

The World Health Organisation has declared monkeypox a global “health emergency” in the first designation of this nature since the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision followed a committee meeting of experts who called for a coordinated international response to help combat the disease. This is the seventh time the WHO has made a global emergency declaration since 2009.
