It has been noted that the baboon population in KZN is less that 10% of the expected baboon populations are highly fragmented and largely dependent on protected areas. The chacma baboon (Papio ursinas) is listed as Least Concern in the Red List of Mammals (2016). However, this does, not give an accurate assessment of baboon populations in South Africa, the reason being that only a few studies conducted since 2004 have observed (Beamish 2010) or estimated the sizes of subpopulations.
