Soudan Mine Hoist Motor

Turn up your speakers! This is the 600 horsepower, 2400 volt AC Westinghouse motor that drives the hoist system for the Soudan Underground Mine near Duluth, Minnesota. The motor, along with all the other equipment in the system, is all-original from 1924. The motor is variable-speed and reversible, and can move the hoist cars at a maximum speed of 11 MPH.
