Frank Auerbach: Selected Works, 1978 – 2016 at LUHRING AUGUSTINE

James Kalm scoots through downtown Manhattan on election night, avoiding police blockades in SoHo, and threatened protests on the Lower East Side, to bring hardcore paint-head viewers a walk-through tour of “Frank Auerbach: Selected Works, 1978 – 2016.” Having first encountered the work of Auerbach in the “swinging London” of the mid 1970s, your correspondent has kept an appreciative eye out for his latest developments. This show presents a series of portraits from a small cast of longtime friends, and the artists wife. The included landscapes are scenes of North London in and around the artist’s own neighborhood. Also displayed are a series of graphite drawings with some self-portraits.
