Myanmar’s deposed leader jailed for four years

Myanmar’s deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi has received a four-year jail sentence in the first verdict from several court cases which could see her in prison for decades. The 76-year-old has been in detention since February when the military seized power in a coup just months after she won a landslide election victory. Ms Suu Kyi has been charged with a range of offences – including corruption and violating the secrets act –which carry a maximum prison sentence of more than 100 yeas when combined. The first verdict related to incitement and violating coronavirus restrictions but more cases are due before the court in the coming months.
