5-Minute Ethnography: Billy Frank Jr., The Nisqually Tribe, and The Boldt Decision
Billy Frank Jr. is one of the most important figures in the struggle for human rights, and stands in the same tradition as some of the best known non-violent human rights activists in history.
Beyond that, during the Washington Territory Indian Wars of 1855-56 that set the stage for this and other conflicts in the region, the bravery, wisdom, and humanity of The Nisqually Tribe and their Chief Leschi played a critical role in leading the Native people of the Salish Sea region in their resistance to militarized colonialism.
However, most people have never heard of Billy Frank Jr., and have no idea where the Nisqually Tribe even is. Take 5 minutes to learn a little bit about this lesser known, but legally critically important chapter of history.
Being a 5 minute short documentary, this will of course not cover everything, and is not fully chronological, but I hope it is clear enough. I encourage feedback and questions if you have them! Also, if anything is inaccurate historically,
