When we talk about autism spectrum disorder we’re talking about a disorder listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) that has deficits in social communication and social interaction as well as restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior interests and activities. Borderline personality disorder is also in the DSM, however, this is a personality disorder, specifically a cluster B personality disorder, so it’s in the same cluster as antisocial, narcissistic, and histrionic personality disorders. With borderline personality disorder we see a pattern of unstable relationships, unstable mood, impulsivity, identity disturbance, and anger, so at first glance it appears there are a lot of differences between these two disorders.
