Smokie’s CHRIS NORMAN - How He Became A Rock Legend

Please excuse the fact that this interview does not contain video of Chris. At the time of recording Chris’ camera failed him. The Rise of Smokie: Chris Norman and his school friends formed a band in the late 1960s, initially called The Yen and later Kindness, before becoming the successful soft rock/pop group Smokie in the early 1970s. Smokie quickly rose to international fame with their distinctive sound and hit songs like “If You Think You Know How to Love Me“ and “Living Next Door to Alice.“ Chris Norman’s Musical Influences: From a young age, Chris was influenced by the rise of rock ’n’ roll in the 1950s and early 1960s, listening to and emulating artists like Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Little Richard. His family also had a background in show business, which further encouraged his musical interests. Smokie’s Songwriting and Sound Evolution: In the early days, Smokie’s music had a more acoustic, folk-rock sound, but they gradually adapted a more polished pop-rock style, incorporating big production and string arrangements. While they initially relied on outside songwriters, the band eventually started writing more of their own material as well. Chris Norman’s Departure and Solo Success: In 1982, Chris Norman decided to leave Smokie and pursue a solo career. His first major solo hit was the duet “Stumblin’ In“ with Suzi Quatro, and he went on to achieve significant success in Europe, particularly in Germany, with songs like “Midnight Lady.“ Over the decades, he has continued to release successful solo albums, blending rock, pop, folk, and country influences. Smokie’s Continued Legacy: Even after Chris Norman’s departure, Smokie continued to perform and record new music with different vocalists, but Norman’s voice remains the most associated with the band’s biggest hits. Chris has maintained a positive relationship with his former bandmates and occasionally reunited with them for special performances. Chris Norman Today: Now in his 70s, Chris Norman continues to tour extensively across Europe, performing both Smokie classics and his solo hits. He has been honored with various awards over the years and is revered as a beloved figure in the global music scene, with a career that has spanned over five decades. Latest Album and Continued Creativity: In 2020, Chris Norman released a new album called “Junction 55,“ which he considers his best work to date. While he doesn’t have plans for another album immediately, he remains committed to creating new music and continuing to delight his loyal fan base.
