The Thematic Duality of Fireworks in A Silent Voice

A Silent Voice, directed by Naoko Yamada, has many of the visual traits that I’ve come to appreciate from her work, especially when it comes light. One of my favorite sequences from an audio/visual perspective is the fireworks scene, and I think that’s in part why I became really interested in their motivic purpose within the story when they are such a small part of the film. Today we take a look at how one motif that only exists in two scenes speaks to the larger themes of the work.
