Sunak Defies Tory Calls for Tax Cuts as Johnson Kicks Off Crucial Conference
As Prime Minister Boris Johnson kicks off the Conservative Party conference today, there is growing pressure from within his own party for tax cuts. However, Chancellor Rishi Sunak has refused to commit to any cuts before the next election, despite calls from senior Tories such as Michael Gove.
Gove has said that tax cuts are “essential“ to help people struggling with the cost of living crisis. He has also warned that the government’s failure to deliver on its promises on tax will damage its chances of winning the next election.
Other Conservative MPs have also called for tax cuts, arguing that they are necessary to boost the economy and create jobs. However, Sunak has said that he is “committed to balancing the books“ and that tax cuts will only come once the economy is stronger.
