Abstract:
Most studies of ritual in early complex societies of the Near East have focused on elite and/or public behavioral domains. Yet, the vast bulk of the population would not have been able to participate in such public displays. In this paper, we explore the evidence for household rituals in lower stratum residences in the Early Bronze Age. Data from the archaeological site of Tell es-Safi/Gath and other sites will be used as an illustration of the nature and difficulty of identifying household rituals.
