He was the son of a merchant, and from an early age, he showed a talent for art. He began his art education at the Kazan School of Fine Arts, where he studied under the artist Apollinary Vasnetsov. Later, he moved to St. Petersburg, where he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts. He was a diligent student and received several awards for his work, including the coveted title of “Academician“.
