Homology vs Homoplasy | Cladogram vs. Phylogram

Homology is similarity that reflects common descent and ancestry. Another way of comparing and classifying features among organisms is homoplasy. Homoplasy is similarity (some might say superficial similarity) arrived at via independent evolution. Homology may or may not imply conserved development. A phylogram is a branching diagram (tree) that is assumed to be an estimate of a phylogeny. The branch lengths are proportional to the amount of inferred evolutionary change. A cladogram is a branching diagram (tree) assumed to be an estimate of a phylogeny where the branches are of equal length. Problem: Which of the following scenarios is an example of homology? A) The hair present on the body of chimpanzees and man. B) The fins of dolphins and cichlid fish. C) The wings of insects and bats. D) The wings of birds and bats. #Homology #Homoplasy #cladogram #Phylogram #domain #kingdom #phylum #Class #genus #ScientificNames #taxonomicHierarchy #species #phyliogeneticTree #Evolution #speciation #diagram #branchingInAPhylogeneticTree #Genetics #bilology #taxonomy #populationGenetics #hawaiiIslands #founderEffect #geneticDrift #geneticVariation #taxa #clade #Paraphyletic #Monophyletic #Polyphyletic #taxonomicRank
