Learn how to paint an acrylic portrait faster! I’ll demonstrate, in real-time, an alla prima, freehand portrait—from start to finish—of an elderly woman with a white bonnet/ head covering. The portrait depicts her with head bowed, praying. The 30-minute is a fun exercise to see how efficient you can get with your color choices, mixing and brushwork. If you do this regularly, it will help you become a better artist.
To prepare for this 8 x 10 portrait, I added a raw umber dark/ ultramarine blue ground, and painted on top. I love the chiaroscuro highlights and the sense of drama shown in the reference photo. It reminds me of an Old Master’s portrait, so this was wonderful to paint from.
