30-Minute Acrylic Portrait: "Elderly Woman Praying" | "REALISTIC PORTRAIT PAINTING TUTORIAL"

The 30-minute is a fun exercise to see how efficient you can get with your color choices, mixing and brushwork. If you do this regularly, it will help you become a better artist. To prepare for this 8 x 10 portrait, I added a raw umber dark/ ultramarine blue ground, and painted on top. I love the chiaroscuro highlights and the sense of drama shown in the reference photo. It reminds me of an Old Master’s portrait, so this was wonderful to paint from. At the end of it, I found myself wanting to put more work into the portrait.
