Elaine Paige, often hailed as the “First Lady of British Musical Theatre“, has left an indelible mark on the world of stage and song. Born on March 5, 1948, in Barnet, Hertfordshire, England, Elaine Jill Bickerstaff, later known as Elaine Paige, her journey to stardom began when she joined the musical theater scene in the late 1960s. One of her most iconic performances came in 1978 when she starred as Eva Perón in the original West End production of “Evita.“ Her rendition of “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina“ became a global sensation, earning her critical acclaim and a place in musical history. In 1983, Elaine Paige continued to captivate audiences with her portrayal of the troubled rock star in “The Rose,“ a musical adaptation of the 1979 film about Janis Joplins live. Another memorable moment in Paige’s career came with her duet with Barbara Dickson in the 1984 musical “Chess.“ Their duet, “I Know Him So Well,“ became an instant classic, topping the charts in the UK and earning them a place in the record books as the first British female duo to achieve a number-one hit in the UK Singles Chart. She earned her numerous awards and accolades, including an Olivier Award for her outstanding contribution to musical theatre. This is a live performance at the Platengala 1984 in Holland.
