Gastrointestinal bleeding from varices is a medical emergency requiring urgent therapeutic endoscopy. Active bleeding is encountered from a cardia varix and this is treated by band ligation. The culprit lesion is targeted and ligated with immediate cessation of bleeding. The remaining varices in the esophagus are then ligated.
