THIRUNAGESWARAM - The Lord Rahu’s Temple (The snake Planet)
Thirunageswaram is located at the southern bank of the river Kaveri
7 km from Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. A village in the outskirts of Kumbakonam. Sri Naganatha Swamy Temple is located in the middle of Thirunageswaram dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is also known as Lord Rahu Sthalam (The Snake Planet). This Temple is one of the nine Navagraha sthalas. This temple was built by Aditya Chola during 10th century A.D. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva and is worshiped as Naganathar and is represented by the linga. The temple has a separate shrine for Rahu. The unique feature is that Lord Rahu is seen with human face. While in other places Lord Rahu is worshipped with a serpent face. This is also the only place wherein one can view Rahu bhagawan with his consorts. Goddess Parvati is worshiped as Giri Gujambal. It is believed that the goddess is in mode of deep penance.
In this shrine milk abhishekam is perfomed during rahukaala to lord Rahu, the milk when poured over the idol, turns Blue which is clearly visible. Thousands of people will visit this temple whenever the planet Rahu transits from one zodiac to another.
It is very effective to chant Lord Rahu Gayatri Mantra for 9 Times everyday to reduce the malefic effects of Snake Planet.
“Om naakadhwajaaya vidmahae
padma hastaaya dheemahi
tanno raahu prachodayaath“
