His earliest musical training was at the Premonstraterian monastery in 1761, from which he went to the Jihlava Gymnasium to study under the Jesuits. In 1771 he enrolled in Olmouc University in theology, later transferring to Vienna in 1776. In 1783 he was able to study briefly with visiting composer Joseph Marti
