Guinea-Bissau president says armed coup attempt thwarted

Gunfire could be heard around the presidential palace in Guinea-Bissau’s capital for several hours, as heavily armed men apparently tried to reach President Embalo. The president said an attempted coup had been thwarted, with many people dying “on one side and the other”.
