Despite difficulties with her mother-in-law and the loss of her daughter Sophie, the birth of her son Crown Prince Rudolf improved her standing, though her health suffered. After the tragic death of her son in 1889, Elisabeth withdrew from court duties, travelling extensively and obsessively maintaining her beauty until her assassination in 1898.
