Whitlock is the first man in 41 years to repeat as Olympic champion on the event, after Zoltan Magyar won in 1976 and 1980.
Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan, the 2019 world bronze medallist, was seeking a historic medal in the final but slipped off the horse early in his routine. He finished seventh.
For Whitlock, the win completes a five-year period of domination on the event. Since Rio, he has picked up two world titles (2017, 2019) and a silver medal in 2018. He was European champion in 2019. _____________________________________________________
