Renault has unveiled the R17, a modern reinterpretation of a classic, bringing a nostalgic design from the 1970s into the future with an electric powertrain. Collaborating with French designer Ora Ïto, Renault crafted a stunning vehicle that echoes the Renault 17, a hatchback that was on the market from 1971 to 1979. However, the R17 is more than a nod to the past; it boasts sleek, modern lines and updated proportions that make it feel distinctly futuristic.
The car’s design is striking, with rectangular LED headlights blending seamlessly into the front, while the back features a full-width LED taillight that complements the car’s clean, simple lines. Flared fenders add a touch of sportiness to the overall stance, making it feel more aggressive than the original Renault 17. Subtle details like louvers give the design an extra level of sophistication.
Inside, the cabin is a masterpiece of retro-modern design. Ora Ïto has utilized materials and fabrics reminiscent of the 1970s but cleverly hidden the technology. The dashboard features four rectangular displays behind the unique rectangular steering wheel, with a horizontally positioned central display resembling a vintage radio.
Despite its impressive 270-horsepower electric motor and 249-mile range, Renault has no plans for mass production. The R17 will remain a one-off concept car, set to be showcased at events like the 2024 Paris Motor Show in October. It stands as a bold tribute to Renault’s heritage while pushing the boundaries of automotive design.
